How to calculate support ticket labor cost

Use three inputs you can verify from your own support operation: monthly ticket volume, average active handling minutes per ticket, and loaded hourly labor cost.

Support hours = tickets × handling minutes ÷ 60. Monthly ticket labor cost = support hours × loaded hourly labor cost. Labor cost per ticket = monthly ticket labor cost ÷ tickets.

Example only: 2,000 tickets × 8 minutes ÷ 60 = 266.67 active handling hours. At $35 per loaded labor hour, modeled monthly ticket labor cost is $9,333.33, or about $4.67 per ticket.

What should go into the inputs?

Ticket volume: use the number of tickets your team actually handles in the period you want to model. Handling time: use active time spent working the ticket, not calendar time from open to close. Loaded hourly labor cost: use the internal hourly labor figure your business considers appropriate for planning rather than assuming the calculator knows your wages, benefits, taxes, or overhead.

This tool isolates direct active-handling labor so you can compare that component with software cost, staffing plans, or repeated-question volume without treating the result as total support cost.

What to trust — and what not to assume

Direct active-handling labor only; excludes software, idle time, management, training, escalations, reopens, channel mix, AI costs and customer-impact claims.
